Red Komodo 6K Cinema Camera Why is the Best

So, for me, Red Komodo 6K Cinema Camera has always been a great camera because of its global shutter its far more cinema orientated and much better than their larger cameras.

If you are a Red Camera shutter you already know that Red Gemini, Red Monstro, and Red Epic Helium have a global shutter while other cameras including the Arri Alexa mini aren’t global shutter.

the Komodo is running a new software system from red that is so much better than the software running on dsmc2 and thought it was slow and difficult to use.

Body

Red Komodo 6K 1

when it comes to the build and design Red Komodo is an excellent gimbal camera in terms of body weight about two pounds in comparison with Sony FX6 the red komodo is smaller the fx6 is a few centimeters longer and taller the mount of FX6 is higher up on the body.

Screen Type

when it comes to monitor the komodo comes with a square touch screen on the top of the camera this can be used to monitor your image.

the Red Komodo touchscreen makes it incredibly easy to navigate, it also has all of the exposure monitoring and focusing tools that you would want from a cinema camera. The traffic lights and waveform exposure tools are great for getting good exposure consistently.

Video Outputs

the komodo has one singular SDI output and it’s in a fine spot in the bottom underneath the batteries it has one HDMI and one SDI.

Autofocus

the komodo has the basic autofocus system which works well but there is no tracking which limits its use case.

The autofocus on the Red comodo does have decent continuous autofocus that’s still in beta and it searches a bit harder.

Red Komodo has a small HD indie monitor with touch red control that would help the autofocus aside you can manually focus either of these rigs with the use of a focus motor.

Sensor

the Red Komodo 6K features a super 35 image sensor where currently you can only record up to 60 frames per second on the komodo and slow motion and gimbal work.

Image Quality

the image that comes from Red Komodo has a really pleasing look the raw format is excellent with awesome image quality and excellent post-production compatibility.

It’s also16-bit which captures much more color information in the raw file than 12-bit files, you can also capture prores internally on the komodo which could be great for faster turnaround projects.

So, overall the komodo has the best quality formats out of the bunch internally even better than Sony FX6 and Canon C70.

Frame Rates

The Red Komodo has the most limited high frame rate options from other Red Cameras as you reduce the acquisition resolution in R3d you’ll be able to capture higher frame rates that you are able to capture 6k up to 40 fps and then 120 fps in 2k but you have a heavy crop at this point.

ND System

The Red Komodo doesn’t have an ND system built in but there are plenty of ND mount adapter options available in case you want to use pl or ef lenses instead of rf native lenses.

Shutter

the komodo features a global shutter which means it has no rolling shutter it exposes the whole sensor at the same time unsurprisingly.

Ports

When it comes to media types the komodo has a single c-fast 2.0 card slot the komodo features a very limited amount of inputs and outputs.

It has a 9 export single 12g SDI port, and 12-volt dc input, and then a headphone out a 3.5 milmic in on the side.

the 12g SDI port is also pretty delicate so make sure to follow reds practices when setting up your camera or if you really want to be safe you can grab an isolator.

the komodo has a headphone and a 3.5 mil mic in on the side of the body, so if you want to use another audio source you will need to either record your audio externally or grab some kind of audio module for the camera this will provide much better quality audio.

Battery Power

the komodo uses Canon’s older BP battery and has the highest power draw by far at roughly 37 watts the commodore requires much more batteries for equivalent run times.

the Komodo has a dual bp plate on the rear of the camera which you can run one or two large BP batteries some kind of V or gold mount battery plate on the back of the camera

Red Komodo 6K Price

When it comes to price the komodo is expensive camera because you really need to grab a few accessories to make it a more usable package the komodo is close in price at just around $6000.

Advantages

  • Capable of shooting raw video

Wrapping Up

the komodo is the most versatile form factor with a great design for high-end productions maybe its small body does mean that you will need to add some accessories to it to make it usable with a bunch of buttons and controls.

Conclusion

Red Komodo is a great camera for a lot of reasons in full sunlight and is by far the most versatile but really requires some accessories to get usable.

Komodo is actually a really nice option because of what this camera offers it’s capturing in 6k and has the ability to monitor in 4K.
