This is Panasonic GH6 specs review and this camera is by far the most powerful micro four thirds camera ever made if you’re a content creator working professional or videographer there are 10 things to know about the GH6, the GH6 has a major improvement over the GH5 mark II and the previous generation of cameras.
So, with GH6 you can record in pro race even though the files are huge but they always have incredible amount of data so you can work with even when you’re recording 1080.

when you do it in prores the quality is exceptional on any camera and also prores is really good for clientwork because it doesn’t matter what computer you have prores will always work really well and really fast.
If you are a Canon R5 user or Sony A7S III they don’t offer prores they offer their codecs which are really hard to work.
GH6 Body
When it comes to ergonomics the GH6 grip feels almost identical to the Sony FX3 it’s a much more pronounced grip and it’s far bigger than the likes of the GH5 mark II which is kind of the same as the GH5.
the build quality is really solid when you feel this camera in your hands it feels like they didn’t save on materials it has two rack buttons one is on the front side and one on the top.
The advantage of the GH5 Mark II is the battery door still has the same sort of rubbery feel as the grip itself whereas on the GH6 it is a little bit slippery.
GH6 has some of the upgrades over the GH5 there’s a big red record button on the front one on the top and you can still use the shutter button.
there are two custom function buttons and you can program this to whatever you like just hold it down it’ll bring up a menu and you can select whichever mode you want to be activated on each button.
GH6 has a cooling fan like a new Canon R5C which means it doesn’t have any overheating issues and considering that this camera is capable of recording 5.7k which is a lot up to 60 fps
the top dial layout is pretty much identical to prior cameras except now you get all new audio button which allows you direct access to the audio menu.
the GH6 is slightly wider than the GH5 mark II and it’s because of the new exhaust fan that’s on the back to help keep things cool.
the GH6 feels great in the hand and the new addition of the fan doesn’t impact that in any way it doesn’t matter which orientation you’re shooting in with the flippy screen everything is where you need it and it’s easy to access with both thumbs or by using your fingers on the top.
GH6 features a usb type-c and an HDMI port it has a record button on the front of the camera, it has two buttons on the inside right by the grip that can be customized used for things like depth of field preview and stuff like that or just any settings you can go in and customize those as well.
It has continuous shooting modes and also the ability to set a shooting timer and then on the back of the camera, it has a variety of buttons.
Menu
You can customize the camera the way you want the menu can take a little bit of time but once you’re familiar with how the custom function buttons work you just hold them down to customize them or where all the options are internally it makes it very easy to get exactly what you want to be set up.
Screen
GH6 features the flippy tilty screen it has a 1.84 million dot LCD touch screen so you can navigate the menus just by using your finger you can flip it out like a conventional Panasonic GH5 and it also has the ability to flip up like the Panasonic S1H.
if you want to check the exposure in any section of your frame you can do that just by moving your finger around on the lcd screen you can probably see the grey ring around the screen.
Autofocus
In terms of the autofocus, Panasonic didn’t go for phase detection autofocus with the GH6 if you’re gonna be using the GH6 on a tripod and talking to the camera it will work fine but where it won’t work fine, overall with the exception of the autofocus not being on par with the Sony A7S III or FX3.
Autofocus performance on GH6 has less hunting and less pulsing than even the GH5 mark II but it’s very close I think with some tweaking on the GH5 mark II you can get very similar results to that of the GH6.
It means when it finds focus it pulls focus a little quicker and you get a little bit less hunting with the stock settings autofocus performance will heavily depend on the lens you’re using if you’ve got some of the older prime lenses the autofocus performance it’s not going to perform as well as new lenses.
Image Quality
when it comes to image quality and if you’ve ever shot with the gh5, gh5s or the gh5 ii, Panasonic GH6 looks really special in comparison, and especially when you start talking about the higher frame rate modes 4k 120 looks absolutely stunning.
the image quality out of this is every bit as good as the far more expensive cameras like Sony FX3 or Sony A7S III when you’re talking about 120fps there’s no compromise in image quality between 120 60 30 or 24p so it depends which you want to use.
When it comes to the color science out of the gh6 looks fantastic both in v-log once it’s graded with your standard luts or if you’re using one of the standard picture profiles it looks great and the standard profile also looks very good.
the GH6 is predominantly a 10-bit camera so if you like to grade your footage and push the colors and contrast around a lot this will give you far better results.
Stabilization
When it comes to stabilization GH6 has better in-body stabilization even more than previous models and if you combine that with lenses that have stabilization as well then it’s just you’re going to get extremely stable footage out of this camera.
Low Light
When it comes to the low light the GH6 does have better low light performance than the gh5 mark ii i found the gh6 to be usable up to about 2000 maybe slightly higher around 3200 whereas on the GH5 Mark II it kind of caps out at about 1200 above that starts to get quite noisy.
Dynamic Range
dynamic range works great on GH6 in v-log and in the standard picture profiles thanks to a new feature called dr boost which stands for dynamic range boost so its dynamic range with or without shooting in v log has definitely been improved.
Shutter Angle
GH6 has a shutter angle and when you switch to between frame rates and shoot different frames like you should 24 then you decided to do some slow mo 60 or 120 fps when you have it shutter speed you have to adjust it and when you have a shutter angle it always stays the same and no matter what you when you switch between frame rates your shutter angle is going to be the same.
Auto Exposure
when it comes to auto exposure the GH6 doesn’t blow out the background if the lighting changes this was a huge flaw on the GH5 mark II and you need to set it to manual exposure in certain lighting conditions whereas the GH6 seems to expose far better without those drastic jumps.
Connectivity
the USB-C connectivity on the side of the camera you can potentially record out of this directly to an SSD drive in a future firmware upgrade.
You can also power and charge the camera via USB PD you also get an external charger to make all of this easy if you want to power the camera for long periods of time you can still use the old dummy batteries but if you already have a USB PD power supply you can just plug it in and run.
Audio
the GH6 supports four channels of audio so if you’re gonna be using the dmw xlr adapter it was out many years ago it still works and still sounds great and it’s completely compatible with the GH6 like the GH5 we still get our 3.5 millimeter input jack and our headphone out.
So, if you want to listen to your files either in real-time as you’re recording or if you want to listen to them on playback you can simply plug in a set of headphones or use a conventional microphone.
Storage
GH6 has an sd and cf express card slot you get one of each and so you can use an sd card and you can also use a cf express type b card keep in mind that you can’t use two sd cards you can only use one of each.
not that cf express memory cards are super fast it helps you dump in the footage but it also allows this camera to record prores hq.
