the Canon R5C is a potential cinema camera but how it does compare to a real cinema camera like the C70 this is a review between the Canon R5C VS C70 so I want to just give you my opinion of the differences between the two cameras and which is better.
Today I’m talking about the Canon R5C and really just my thoughts on it how it feels again the C70. So, hopefully, you learn something useful that makes you buy one of those cameras like Canon C70, EOS R5C, Canon R5, or Canon R6.
Canon has two major cameras announcement number one Canon R5C and Canon C70 which C70 has a firmware update that enables it to shoot internal raw.
So, if you need a camera that does both stills and video I can gladly say the R5C is the perfect camera for you because the Canon C70 doesn’t shoot stilts.
So it really matters what camera and setup you would prefer to use so I’ll walk you through my process. If you already think that it’s time to beef R5C and spend some amount of money and get the C70 I’m going to talk about the features and reasons why you should either stick with the R5 or jump to the Canon C70.

Body
the canon c70 is a bigger and heavier body than R5C and comes with fewer compromises, the r5c on the other hand is small and like a photo camera.
the Canon C70 body is slightly better for video in my opinion whereas the R5C is a little bit bigger than the EOS R5 it’s still pretty much a stills camera so, in my opinion, so I prefer the body of the C70 for a smaller size.
the C70 does have dedicated buttons on the back to adjust your audio levels whereas the R5C doesn’t have any and you need to go into the menu and change those.
C70 has a dedicated recording button on the left-hand side of the camera whereas the R5C has no buttons on the left side so those are differences about the body let’s move on to the video capabilities.
C70 has built-in ND filters, mini xlr board and it also has a full-size HDMI, two mini xlr ports it has a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack a time code, and dedicated buttons on the back of the camera.
Whereas the R5C features a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack and a time code with the new hot shoe it uses an xlr module or some dedicated xlr microphones.
Screen
the R5C has a viewfinder so in bright sunlight you can just view or you just can see your image through the viewfinder and the C70 just have a flippy screen so that’s the disadvantage.
Sensor
The Canon R5C features a full-frame Dual ISO sensor compared to the DGO super 35 sensor which is not a full frame of the C70 and shooting with super 35 is really awesome.
I prefer a DGO sensor over dual ISO because you will get a much cleaner image if you shoot at high ISO range at ISO 3200 and shooting between 800 and 3200.
You can use full super 35 glass and all the cine lenses whereas the R5C has a cropped mode and you can also switch to super 35.
So, with Canon C70 you can use a speed booster and that makes the C70 almost full frame but you’re limited to EF class whereas on the R5C you can basically use all the lenses that you want RF or EF with a full-frame sensor.
Image Quality
In terms if the image quality that comes straight out of the R5C is really nice and digital but i personally prefer the image of the Canon C70 because it looks a littl filmic.
the R5C has an 8K sensor and the C70 has a 4K sensor they both have pretty similar images with the C70 you get advantages with 8K and if you downscale it to 4K it results in a sharper image.
Autofocus
the r5c has eye autofocus whereas the c70 only has face autofocus the autofocus is mostly better with R5C in almost every situation it has eye detect autofocus whereas the C70 only has face autofocus.
The Canon C70 only utilizes dual pixel autofocus 1 and apparently the euros R5C when shooting video also only uses dual pixel autofocus 1.
Video Capabilities
If we compare the video recording capabilities of the R5C to the EOS C70 the body and ergonomics of the C70 feel more practical so its built-in ND filters, it has a full-size HDMI port C-log 2, and built-in xlr inputs, whereas with the R5 C you do have to go with the touchscreen into the system.
Video Resolution
In terms of the resolution, the R5C shoots 8K whereas the C70 only shoots 4K so that is a big step up to R5C which wins at this point.
So, with R5C you can record ak at 60 fps raw or 5.5 k raw at 60 fps internal whereas the Canon C70 can shoot 4k 60 fps but can’t shoot raw yet,
So, because 8K is a really big file it really matters how you will handle it you can only go up to 8k 50 or 60 if you use external power solutions.
So, it’s cool to have 8k but how usable is that 8k raw really I prefer using 4K because you can easily edit and have manageable file sizes compared to a huge 8K.
Slow Motion
So, both cameras record in 4k 120 but the C70 can read the entire sensor one by one and 4k 120 whereas the R5C has a 8k sensor and makes this out at 60fps so it achieves 4k 120 by and it has disadvantage over C70 because when it reads the sensor it will skip some lines to achieve the 120fps.
lowlight performance
When it comes to lowlight performance both of these cameras are pretty good but using C70 up to ISO 6400 you get more of a stop difference from the R5C.
Dynamic Range
When it comes to dynamic range the C70 is better because it has a dual gain output sensor when you record with R5C internally in xfavc then you can get canon log 3.
But if you record in raw which is only 8k and want to shoot in 4k then you have to switch to xfavc and then in raw and you will get canon log 2 but only can monitor canon log 3 on the camera.
Whereas on the C70 it doesn’t have any of these compromises where to record in raw xfavc it always can record in canon log 2 and canon log 2 has more dynamic range and the amount of detail you can gain with canon log 2 is really tremendous.
If you record with both cameras in raw there is a difference in the dynamic range and a nicer highlight role on the c70 with a little bit more shadow detail.
the R5C has 14 stops of dynamic range and isn’t good compared to the C70 16 to 17 stops of dynamic range.
Well, because of its highest range of dynamic range the image has a lot more details in the highlights and is just enriched with an impressive cinematic image.
Storage
Canon R5C has a CF express type b card whereas the Canon C70 has an SD dual card slot with two cards in it.
So, I prefer using CF express type B card over the small SD cards because the CF express card is bigger and you can go up to two terabytes.
It’s also a lot faster when you transfer all of the footage that you shot in a day it takes up less time than doing this on SD cards.
The Canon C70 has a dual card slot with two cards in it where you can simultaneously record to both cards at the same time.
Batteries
When it comes to power the C70 has a bigger battery and lots more options for powering whereas the EOS R5C does not have these options and the battery size is smaller.
the R5C uses the batteries from the R5 or R6 which results in that you can only film for about 30 or 40 minutes.
So, C70 wins here because it has bigger batteries with a lot more power it has the option of using some special kind of batteries that not only have a d-tap out but also a USB out whereas R5C doesn’t have any of these options and the batteries are a lot smaller and it doesn’t have that much power in comparison to the Canon C70.
Price Differences
the R5C is available for $4,800 and equipped with an xlr adapter the price became almost $5,000 whereas C70 is priced at $5,500 so that is a difference of $700 you can find links below but if you want to know prices from other places you can check my full review from R5C and C70.
So, looking at its closest competition the sony fx3 is priced $3,900 and comes with a top handle that has xlr inputs.
Key Diferences
the C70 reads the sensor line by line it’s a one-to-one image whereas the R5C has a bigger full-frame sensor and the C70 has a super 35 sensor.
But you can use the speed booster on C70 to get that full frame look if you want to buy the C70 it has a better looking image, a more dynamic range the codecs to record on both or you can choose in canon raw or xf avc.
So, there is plenty of detail in both of them but with the C70 the raw is only 4K so you will get smaller files and raw on the R5C is only 8K, and an xf avc only 4K.
Wrapping Up
When it comes to the shots the R5C is only slightly better due to the ak sensor whereas the C70 does have a better dynamic range and the image from the C70 is not much noisier than the R5C despite having the smaller sensor.
If you plan to shoot with the C70 you don’t have to buy or pack ND filters because C70 is built in ND, it has a battery that will power the camera and add in the mini xlrs for audio. The C70 is a bit more expensive but you will not have to buy a ton of extra batteries and ND’s.
Conclusion
So, my conclusion in the end I still prefer the Canon C70 over the R5C because of its internal ND filters and the dynamic range.
It’s a little bit better to shoot with the battery solution whereas the R5C if you shoot a lot on gimbals and autofocus is a must for you.
the R5C might also be the better option if you make videos on youtube the R5C and don’t want to spend the money on a cinema camera or a video-only camera.
the autofocus is better if you’re a video shooter then I think the 8k of the R5C and the autofocus are factors.
So, when comparing EOS R5, Canon C70, and EOS R5C the R5C would have been a clear top choice if you using it for shooting.

Is Canon R5C Better than Canon C70?
the R5C has a full-frame sensor that shoots 8k and can shoot raw but C70 does not a full-frame sensor all things that are missing from the C70 so the R5C is clearly the better camera right well.
