Canon EOS R5 VS EOS R6 What Are the Differences

Today I will talk about the Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6 and will look at the specifications to help you which one you would choose and will tell you what I did with these cameras because Canon R6 is a competitor to the new Sony A7 IV.

So, Canon EOS R has been around for a while but now we have R6 and R5 which is a top range camera.

So, what is the difference between EOS R and EOS R6, the first big difference between the two cameras is that EOS R has dual card slots.

And if you’re going to be upgrading from EOS R to the Canon R6 you know it’s only $700 more and just with 700, you will get dual memory card slots.

Canon EOS R6 is the younger brother to the Canon EOS R5. Of course, there are some key differences that I’ll talk about but if you want to check my overall thoughts on the EOS R5 which is very similar to the EOS R6 I will go over some of the bigger points.

The R6 is a mid-range model and the Canon EOS R5 is already in a higher range but not the highest as well as Sony A7 IV.

A7 IV is mid-range camera the latest model you must have from Sony and of course, there are better cameras more powerful from the autofocus but no more pixels. The 24th megapixel isn’t always a pro either tool to have many megapixels because that rushes.

Canon released a new camera it’s a new brand Canon EOS R3, of course, it’s even better than R5 and R6 but now I’m talking about cameras in the area under $4,500.

the Sony A1 forms the spearhead as well as the Nikon Z9 and now the Canon R3 is probably high-end but costs beyond $6000, R5 it is now on the market and is expensive flagship similar to its competitor R6 and only has a few rough differences.

The EOS R6 is a very good low light camera If you want to do a video and look into the system of R6 it’s got image stabilization the autofocus gives you more than the R5 I can say an amazing camera for any low light situation.

the EOS R5 has better video features but they both complement each other very well they also have almost identical bodies big difference is the R6 doesn’t have the top screen the files from the R5 and the R6 edit almost identically and they have the same color science.

What are the similarities Between R5 VS R6?

They both have a joystick and the same battery the R6 20 has 45 million pixels also in the video area, R5 filming at 4k even manages 120 frames per second the R6 can also do four degrees no 8 km, and at 4k films with 60 frames per second.

Also, the burst function is similar to 12 pictures mechanically as well as 20 images electronically per second.

There is also a little bit lower resolution than the actual physical opening of the viewfinder and the overall magnification is identical to the EOS R5. But the resolution is lower overall 3.68 million dots compared to 5.76 million dots on the R5.

EVF

the EVF is slightly less resolution compared to the R5 it’s a 3.69 million dot EVF versus the 5.76 million EVF on the R5. The second tip is that I haven’t had any bad experiences using the screen or the EVF.

Shutter

In terms of the shutter, is that the EOS R5 and the EOS R6 can shoot 20 frames a second with the electronic you can do 12 frames with a mechanical shutter whereas with the Canon EOS R you can only shoot 8 frames but it only goes down to five frames per second if you’re using continuous autofocus which is slow.

Video Specs

When it comes to video features of the EOS R5 and EOS R6 they are way better than the EOS R with the EOS R you’re limited to only 8-bit c-log as well as cropped 4k 24p whereas with the EOS R5 and EOS R6 you can shoot 10 bit you can also shoot 4k 24p uncropped full frame and you can shoot 4k 60p and 4k 120p.

there is also 8k raw as well as 4k hq modes within the EOS R5 however all of those including the regular 4k 60p and 120p there is an overheating limit to it but with canon’s new firmware update with the 4k 60 4k 60p you can shoot well over an hour.

The EOS R5 and EOS R6 have put back the thumb joystick as well as the thumb scrolling wheel whereas the EOS R doesn’t have this feature and it has 5-axis internal stabilization.

So, you don’t need to be stuck with the EOS R just look straight into the EOS R6 or the EOS R5 because the EOS R6 is only about $700 more than the EOS R and it is just way better in terms of reliability and the autofocus is just way more accurate and has dual memory card slots if you are looking more into a video camera then you can go with the Sony A7S III.

Sensor Resolution

So the previous model Canon EOS R features 30.3 megapixels, the R6 20.1 and the R5 has 45 megapixels sensor. Some of the differences between the R5 and R6 is of course the sensor the 20-megapixel sensor on the R6 is the same as the 1dx mark III versus the 45-megapixel sensor on the R5.

You don’t actually need more than 20 megapixels because I have mentioned in other blogs on my site that using more megapixels you’re producing very large raw files and having fewer megapixels you get better image quality.

the R5 has a better resolution at 745 megapixels but more pixels on the sensor mean a higher signal noise at night in astrophotography.

Both cameras have full frame sensors and the display and the housing work both cameras can also take 20 pictures in a second. There is a manual mode dial on that there is no cf express card slot, it has two uhs and two card slots.

Dynamic Range

so, in my opinion, the EOS R5 and EOS R6 have more dynamic range than the Canon 5D Mark IV and the Canon 5D Mark III but it’s definitely a step below to the Sony A7R IV.

Autofocus

In terms of the autofocusing at the dual pixel 2 autofocusing system the same as the R5, some people say it’s better than the 1dx mark iii.

the EOS R5 and EOS R6 kill the EOS R with its autofocus if you’re shooting portraits or still life where you don’t have a subject that’s constantly moving then the Canon EOS R is completely fine.

But what if your subject is running around then you the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R have a much more reliable and accurate autofocus.

ISO

Battery

So, both cameras use the same battery type LP-E6NH if we look through the numbers then R5 has 320 shots EV power whereas R6 has 360 shoots saving mode power.

Weight Differences

there is a little bit of difference in the weight R6 is coming at 680 grams versus about 738 grams in R5 so the difference is around 400 grams but keep in mind that as soon as you put the adapter you will add 100 grams more so having a heavy camera is not a good idea at weddings.

if you already have the Canon EOS R and you’re thinking about upgrading to the EOS R5 or EOS R6 the EOS R is listed at $1600 on BH Photo, the EOS R6 is priced at $2500 and the canon R5 is at $3900.

So, that is a radically different price point but there is a lot of details inside in the EOS R6 alongside the EOS R5.

if you want to get the EOS R or the EOS R6 or the EOS R5 I think it depends on what you’re doing and how much money you are wiled to spend.

If you don’t need 120 frames per second and you also don’t need to use it for photography, 4k doesn’t bother you, you want to keep your file sizes to a minimum definitely consider the EOS R.
