today I’m talking about this beast this is my canon c300mark III this is my cinema camera this is the camera that I will shoot with.

there’s a lot of really cool and useful improvements things that people have been asking for from canon for a long time and I think they’ve finally delivered the C300 mark III and it might be one of the most important models in Canon cinema liner.

So, this camera is identical to the C500 Mark II, right down to the interchangeable lens mount, and the acceptance of the same accessories and expansion units.

it’s very well-sized, light, and compact for a cine camera, but with an intuitive button layout, responsive controls, and easy hand-hold-ability.

Features the same digital image stabilization that gives surprisingly steady results, even at longer focal lengths.

Canon C300 mark III

And lucky to say one feature people wanted on this camera you can now use the full dual pixel autofocus and AF MF assist all the way up to 120 frames per second.

Canon has implemented new and exciting features into c300 Mark 3 the third across all the frame rates looks really nice.

Camera Sensor

So let’s take a look at its a brand new sensor of the C300 Mark III it’s a completely new super 35 sensor from Canon.

inside of the C300 Mark III is a completely new super 35 sensor from Canon it has a physical size of 26.2 millimeters by 13.8 the native ISO of 800 and seadog 3.

the maximum recording resolution you can recall this 4096 by 2160 which is the full super 35 sensor capture up to 16 stops at thermic range and this is partly due to the implementation of the technique known as dual gain output.

one thing to be aware of is that dual gain output is only available when shooting at 60 frames per second and the optimum setting for dgo is ISO 800.

this isn’t a new technique and is used by arguably the most popular digital cinematography sentence ever made the area Alexa.

This camera features a brand-new sensor from Canon, which utilizes a Dual Gain Output, not Dual Native ISO, as you’d find on Panasonic or Blackmagic.

by using dual gain output tech on the sensor the noise in the see threader mark III is reduced and that means that the camera is capable of a really high dynamic range.

So one thing I can say is that this dual gain output is only available when shooting at 60 frames per second.

This is more of a dual readout at every ISO similar to what Arri does, essentially it reads out the sensor twice at two different gains before the image is processed.

One big feature is that this sensor can capture up to 16 stops at thermic range and this is partly due to the implementation of the technique known as dual gain output.

this sensor has a saturation prioritizing amplifier for bright areas and a noise prioritizing amplifier for the dark areas which results in high dynamic range and lower noise.

Autofocus

the autofocus isn’t the exact same when in this mode because I was not able to do tracking or face detection but still dial in the speed, and still have the flexible box, and it works pretty well.

It’s not as good as the AF when in 60p or lower, and it requires you to bump the speed and responsiveness to get something usable. But I still think it’s a great feature to have 120 frames per second in 4K.

And to my eye, the image is still just as detailed and sharp with no noticeable artifacts.

The autofocus up to 60 frames per second is identical to the C500 Mark II.

Camera Performance

This camera can record 120 frames per second in 4k in cinema royal light and XFABC with no crop.

it can do 180 frames per second in 2k which is pretty nuts it just crops into super 16 mil and again that’s in raw and in XF AVC.

it has internal nds up to 10 stops and time code SDI out, full HDMI port, three different xlr input takes cf express cards and sd cards and an ef mount.

Canon has added a slow and fast button that you can quickly switch between the different frame rate options.

Good benefit of the Mark III is that can shoot a huge range of high frame rate options you can also shoot up to 180 frames per second in a cropped super 16 mode.

so the other feature that really stands out is something called Jewel gain output or dgo which is a little bit different from Julie so which is a feature that has become a bit more common in other cameras.

one of the key features is the dgo dual gate and output it’s almost like the dual iso but it’s like an HDR basically it’s a new technology that canon put in their cinnamon lines.

so this camera also has new camera stabilization tech it’s not mechanical stabilization it crops the sensor in a little bit and stabilizers.

In comparison with C500 Mark II is an absolute monster for dynamic range but the other benefit to the C500 Mark II is that it has a 6K sensor, that can be used to create oversampled 4K images, where the C300 Mark III only has enough pixels for 4K.

If I compare the C300 mark III vs RED Scarlet-W you can do up to 120 frames per second at full 4k raw as well as you can do 180 frames per second at 2k and on the red, you can do up to 50 frames per second at full 5k raw and at 4k you can do 120 frames per second at 2k you can do up to 240 frames per second.

In comparison with fx9 both of these cameras shots at ISO 4000T 1.5 one point five but FX9 takes the win for low light because the FX9 has a dual base ISO 800 and 4000, but the FX9 seems to be able to handle the highlights a little bit better.

for easy cinema camera comparison, the C300 Mark III with fx9 has similar noise in XF-AVC with noise reduction turned off, to the full-Frame Sony a7 III, with noise reduction turned on, which is crazy impressive.

I found that it works extremely well from a noise perspective, and cleaner than the C500 Mark II, and every other full-frame camera.

as well as being able to shoot in cinema or light it has the option to shoot in three different versions of XF AVC Intra longer and proxy.

this means this camera offers a range of options when shooting at XF AVC depending on what data rate you want to shoot.

Dual Gain Output

Canon C300 dual gain output sensor gets more dynamic range because the dual gain output sensor or DGO is completely different from dual gain sensors.

there are two circuits connected to the sensor and one records the highlights and the other circuit reports the shadow separately, giving it less noise and then combines it as a reason why this camera has more dynamic range than any other camera.

Slow motion performance

when it comes to slow motion, the C300 Mark III definitely takes the wind because I could do K one twenty and still use dual pixel autofocus while in one twenty raw even.

With C300 Mark III you can do over cranked slow-motion footage natively in the camera and you can go as high as up to 120 frames per second which is pretty great 120 frames per second using the full 4k resolution and then if you want even more frames per second you can over crank it farther all the way up to 180 frames per second if you go down to a 2k cropped sensor.

Camera Body Design

the body design is 1250 grams weight, the ability to use either the standard EF mount that comes with it or a locking EF mount or PL mount as extras.

also features electronic ibis, nd system and uses the modular expansion units to give operators the options to change the form factor power options and inputs and output sit.

Another feature I like is support for anamorphic lenses and the ability to record in both C log 2 and C log 3.

it also features dual CF Express slots and an SD card for proxy recording one area of the design I really wish they had changed is the position of the audio controls.

I really like the button layout of the canon c300 mark III because you have lots of buttons and
you can quickly access all the settings that you need and make changes to it whenever you’re running.

touch screen autofocus

canon has great autofocus makes it so nice whether you’re hand holding it or flying it on a gimbal you’re able to have touch-enabled autofocus that’s not just passable but really good on a cinema camera so it makes this camera really ideal.

Dynamic Range

C300 Mark 3 is capable of 16 plus stops of dynamic range which basically would put it up there as being some of the highest dynamic range of any camera on the market with better dynamic range especially combined with the dual gain output sensor having the ability to shoot in c-log 2 with a huge dynamic range.

Canon C three hundred dual gain output sensor is really going to shine in theory get more dynamic range because the dual gain output sensor or DGO is completely different from dual gain sensors.

there are two circuits connected to the sensor and one records the highlights and the other circuit reports the shadow separately, giving it less noise and then combining it that’s why this camera has more dynamic range than any other camera and has ever offered and claims sixteens stops.

when it comes to noise on the C300 there is none for two reasons the first one being the lighting conditions it’s very bright there’s no need for sensor noise and number two the dual gain output gives you an extremely clean image a reason more I added as the best cinema camera.

zoom lens

Canon C 300 Mark III also announced the new cinema zoom lens the CM 10 which is a 25 to 250-millimeter zoom with an aperture of 10- 2.95 between 25 and 180 with it then ramping to 3.95 from 180 to 250.
